5 reviews of Fontevraud Abbey

Fontevraud Abbey

Fontevraud Abbey is the last stage of the route of The Loire Pays de la Loire. It is truly Impressive. This monastic complex was founded in the eleventh century. It is magical and enchanting, as it is a spectacular building. The history that permeates its walls, the details of the architecture and design of each corner make you feel privileged to see it. And the Abbey witnessed the life of Plantagenet. In fact, there lie the remains of Eleanor of Aquitaine with Henry II Plantagenet, Richard the Lionheart, (their son), and Isabella of Angouleme (second wife of John Lackland). At the time of Napoleon I, some units were used as prison cells.
