Ancient site of Christian worship
Celtic Crosses like the Kildalton Cross are not usually associated with Christianity, because they belong to an earlier symbolic tradition. But after the founding of Iona, the Celtic Cross in Scotland came to represent Christianity in the country. Here we found one of the best-preserved crosses in Scotland, dating back to the eighth century.
A biblical narrative is engraved onto it though it is worn by erosion and the passage of time. It includes the passage in which Abraham prepares to sacrifice Isaac. The church and graveyard are worth visiting, too, as there is documentation indicating that the church was built in the fourteenth century and the existence of multiple graves of men of the time, suggesting that it was an important place, possibly where only a privileged few could be buried.
