Mercado de la Bretxa is about 500m from the centre of San Sebastian and is in the Plaza of the same name, ie Bretxa Square. It is opposite the famous María Cristina theatre. Its construction was made by Antonio Cortázar, and dates back to 1870. Originally it was a Market Square, which is still is today but it is now only found in the basement of the building, turning into one of the city's most famous shopping centres, but even today it is known as Bretxa like in its infancy. In the basement of the market you can see all kinds of stalls from: butchers, delicatessens, fishmongers, fruit, poultry, etc.
