The lighthouse of Cabo Polonio emerged from a shipwreck, like many others, and the lighthouse was opened in 1880. At first only the lighthouse keeper and his wife lived in the area as well as a few small fisherman and they all lived in very modest huts. Beginning in the 70's people wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of Montevido as well as the military dictatorships in the country began to settle there.
