Gate to the city
Portal Fosc is located in the old city and was the only way to enter Peñiscola in the sixteenth century. The other city gate, Papa Luna, only offered access from the sea. It has a vaulted interior and is quite dark, hence its name ("fosc" means dark). The construction of the door has been attributed to Juan de Herrera.
