An episcopal city

During the Middle Ages the town of Miranda only had two entrances, one to the north and the other to the west. However, after becoming an episcopal city in 1545, relations with Spain forced the opening of a third door. This wicket, which is smaller than the others, consists of a pointed arch allowing quicker boat access from the Douro, giving rise to its name.
