This statue commemorates 150 years of salutary acts of "Sisters of Mercy", an order founded by Catherine McAuley, an Irish nun, to help the sick children of miners during the gold rushes. The statue shows women helping ailing children, with one holding a torch, an allegory of a heroine who brings light to darkness.
