Pingvellir is one of the most important natural and historical sights to be seen in Iceland. In Spanish, its name is translated as "parliament plains". This is because it was in this place that Alpingi was founded in the year 930. It is one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world. Right in the center of Thingvellir is "law rock", where the Althing used to meet.
