Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach)

11 reviews of Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach)

The Shipwreck Beach

This summer I went with my partner to the Ionian Islands, specifically to Zakinthos, Kefalonia and Corfu. We were looking for a Mediterranean climate and good food but mostly, incredibly clear water and little coves. And we found them. The beaches are wonderful, with fine sand, small white pebbles and amazing cliffs. Only accessible by boat, Navagio Beach has amazingly clear water and the backdrop of cliffs makes for a truly amazing sight. Interestingly, there is a wreck in the middle of the beach. In theory, it was a smuggling ship that wrecked in the 80s. Other theories say that it was the Greek government who put it there to boost tourism.

An image that has become synonymous with the the Greek island of Zakynthos. The story of the wreck has become part of the folk-lore of the area and a major tourist attraction for the local population and the aerial view adds to the drama of the scene.
