Tokaido Road

The Tokaido Road was a very popular route linking Kyoto with Edo in the times of samurai, geisha, shogun, feudal lords and ninjas. It is a long road and took many weeks to travel. No wonder, then, that it is mentioned in many books on the Edo period. There is a piece of road in Hakonethat that can be traveled to reach a checkpoint that was established many decades ago. The story goes that the shogun did not allowed any of the families of the feudal lords of Edo, the old Tokyo, out so many of these controls existed all the way. Today we see a wall of wood with a very large door and an area full of shops in small wooden houses selling crafts of the area.
