8 reviews of Wat Chaiwatthanaram

One of the most spectacular temples around

The Wat Chaiwatthanaram temple was the only one we visited outside the central island of Ayutthaya, since it's 3 miles away and it was quite hot outside, but the effort is worth it since it's one of the most spectacular temples around. It's located next to the river where the barges pass lazily by. Chaiwatthanaram Wat was built by King Prasat Thong in 1630 and has similar architecture to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. It is believed to have been built to commemorate the king's victory in battle. The temple has a Prang (main) tower which is 35 meters high and surrounded by smaller towers and over 100 headless Buddha images.
