Gelateria Marco
(3)
It is very close to the square. Good and varied ice cream comparable to those that can be enjoyed in Tuscany (the best in the world) The restaurant is open until 23h, at least in summer, and it is strange if you don´t see a line of people waiting to order. It´s worth a trip there for a good dinner or lunch with an ice cream from this shop.

This restaurant offers a truly fair value. With a luxury kitchen, made up of the best chefs in the region, it serves traditional cuisine made with products of the highest quality. Customer service is one of the strongest points of the restaurant, as well as signature dishes that are carefully decorated and tasty.

La Portizza
(3)
If you arrive at cocktail time, you won't struggle to find the place - just dive into the crowd and follow the music! The Portizza has been the most popular place in this square for some years. It is named for the small passage that leads to the old Ghetto by way of the bridge, another area of nightlife. If you like to experiment, Toni, one of the owners of the premises, is capable of churning out a new cocktail every week.
Cafés in Trieste
Caffè degli Specchi
(2)
This is the most prestigious cafe in Trieste for its fantastic location, overlooking the stunning central piazza. It is also one of the most expensive, of course. Nevertheless, it is a compelling place to stop when the weather is good; you can sit and soak up the sun while sipping coffee.

Siora Rosa
(3)
Signora Rosa is a timeless restaurant. It is situated between Via Torino and Hortis Square, and in the summer some of its outdoor tables are in front of the public library. The menu has plenty of quick options, like a sandwich with horseradish, or hot cooked meatballs, as well as many hot dishes, including traditional meat lasagna. The value for money is good, and the restaurant is always quite crowded. It's a good option for outdoor dining.
Cafés in Trieste
Caffé Tommaseo
(1)
One of the most interesting cafes in Trieste, still preserving that perfect Viennese style, typical of the Habsbug era. It was opened in 1830, and has always been a meeting place for businessmen and politicians. The 1997 restoration has kept the original style, with mirrors, statues, and decorations by Lorenzo Gatteri. Delicious cakes and sweets, and it regularly hosts art exhibitions and live music.
Restaurants in Trieste
Harry's Grill
(1)
Harry's Grill sits in a location that is hard to compete with. It looks over the Piazza Unità d'Italy, and from its windows you can admire the beautiful buildings. There are tables outside, right on the square itself, and in the summer it's a great spot for lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee. The prices certainly aren't cheap, but you can't say that they're unjustified, given the exclusive surroundings. The stylish interior furnishings reflect those of Harry's Bar in Venice. There's a spectacular chandelier in Murano glass. It's not cheap, but great for a romantic evening.
Restaurants in Trieste
Foraperfora
(1)
The name of this informal restaurant, translated from the dialect of Trieste, could be rendered as "in one side and out the other". It's an old tavern with two entrances. The decor is spartan and wooden. The kitchen is especially good in terms of meats and side dishes.

Restaurants in Trieste
Buffet da Pepi
(1)
Probably one of the most characteristic offerings in Trieste, the Buffet da Pepi is a snack bar/restaurant that offers an incredible selection of cold and boiled meats that are typical of the area. You can enjoy hearty stews or sandwiches, or something even simpler, like raw or cooked ham. The boiled meat is tender, melting in your mouth. You can try pork shoulder, German sausages, bacon, tongue, head and much more, seasoned with sauerkraut, mustard and horseradish. Great beer to accompany the food!
Cafés in Trieste
Knulp Bar
(2)
More than just a bar, Knulp, hidden among the narrow streets of the beautiful Stari Grad Trieste, has been a cultural landmark for years. In addition to serving herbal teas, ginseng drinks, fine wines, cakes, and hot dishes, there's also a library where you can find a large section dedicated to cinema and music (with DVDs and CDs), a corner for gourmet shopping, and an area where you can use the internet. In the back room they have regular film screenings, book presentations, cultural debates. The atmosphere is friendly, warm, and welcoming.
Cafés in Trieste
Caffè Stella Polare
(3)
One of the historic cafes of Trieste. It opened in 1865, in the same place where it still stands today, next to the Grand Canal and just steps from the Church of St. Anthony and the Temple of Saint Spyridon. It has Viennese-style furniture, as you'll find in many other cafes in the city, such as the Tommaseo. The prices are not the cheapest, but it's worth stopping here to soak up the atmosphere of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that still permeates the city. In the summertime, many of the tables are outside, making it perfect for watching people walking in Via Dante, which is one of the busiest streets in Trieste.
Restaurants in Trieste
Zoe Food
(2)
Zoe Food, in the area of Stari Grad, is more than just a restaurant. It always offers different varieties of vegetarian dishes prepared with local, seasonal produce and with ethnic flair. There's also a bar where you can find some fantastic, freshly-prepared smoothies, and a shop selling organic produce and nutritional grains. And finally, it's a meeting place where you can let the kids play freely in their play area. Clean, easy going, friendly.
Restaurants in Trieste
Birreria Kofler Paulaner
(1)
Generous portions, a seemingly endless menu, flexible schedules, and honest prices: this is a great pizzeria, a wonderful place to go when you're hungry. You're sure to be more than satisfied. The choice is varied, but they all focus on pizza, bread or toast; you can top it with all the ingredients you can imagine. The atmosphere has a vaguely German and Central European feel, and a lot of room for large groups. It's on the shore, and you can park across the road.
Restaurants in Trieste
Osteria ai Bechi
(1)
Right on the edge of town, this is a place to eat with a good quality : price ratio. The atmosphere is cozy, with casual but friendly service, and the menu has a good selection available. I especially recommend the fish dishes (the linguine with scallops and cherry tomatoes was delicious!).
Restaurants in Trieste
Birreria Forst
(1)
The Birreria Forst is just a short walk from the University of Trieste, and is the ideal spot for a lunch of local specialties or a lively dinner with friends. Of course you can find a wide selection of beers, from craft, to bottled, and on tap. The restaurant offers a choice of unique dishes that will allow you to sample a range of traditional specialties, as well as an a la carte menu. The service is fast, the staff are friendly, and will personally recommend dishes. Great value for money.
Culinary Interest in Trieste
SaluMare
(1)
It's difficult to define the SaluMare exactly. It's definitely very full, especially in the summer, when customers flock to the pedestrian area outside. As a wine bar it's not too bad, and its position, in a popular area of the delightful neighbourhood of Stari Grad, makes it easily identifiable. Seeing so many people, you can't help but stop. But it's not just a wine bar - you can also stop here for lunch or dinner, or even just stop mid-morning to eat a smoked salmon sandwich. Finally, they have a little shop attached, where you can buy some of the great wines they have on offer.
