You will not believe this site. A bar / restaurant in the middle of the Jersey marina, close to New York, from which you can eat under a parasol looking at Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. It's huge! It has 5 bars which are both indoors and outdoors. One of the areas is covered in sand, and you can eat there while sunbathing. It has its own access from the pier, so that it can be accessed by boat. The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed, with reggae music playing and surfboards decorating the premises. Open every day in the evening, and weekends from noon. I ate there. On the menu you can choose from salads, burgers and seafood. They have a bar dedicated to cocktails and ice drinks. You order your food when you enter and they give you a pager so you can go pick it up when it rings. Definitely recommended.
Jersey City offers many choices of places to go out to eat. La Conguita is a Cuban restaurant that's very close to the Path station. The atmosphere is friendly, the prices are about average, and the food plentiful. I recommend the peril with beans and fried plantains.
El Sitio Grill & Cafe is located in Collingswood, just a few miles from Philadelphia. This recently-opened restaurant offers a fine selection South American dishes and specializes in Peruvian and Ecuadorian cuisine. It is richly decorated with vibrant colors, which seem to be a reflection of the restaurant's young, cheerful owners. There's also a gift store in the restaurant which sells a variety of Peruvian handicrafts and products. Oh, and El Sitio Grill is a BYOB...they don't serve alcohol but you can bring your own from home.
Johnny Rockets is a chain of fast food restaurants designed to transport you back to the classic diners of the 1950's. No detail is spared, from the jukebox in the entrance to the old-fashioned napkin holders on the counter. Sandwiches and other dishes are good, the service is quick and the staff is very nice. You're sure to like it.
If you've just come from one of the Gospel services in Harlem, there are a couple of good places in the area to enjoy a lovely Sunday brunch. One of the best is Cheza Lucienne, a small restaurant with that serves up delicious scrambled eggs with bacon, sausage, or smoked salmon, exquisite desserts, and a variety of other dishes. The staff is really friendly, too.
