My friend took me here for lunch because the food is vegan/vegetarian and it's affordable. Everything looked and sounded incredible.
I had the tempeh, artichoke & mozz (minus the mozzarella), which is a pan-seared marinated tempeh & artichoke hearts with tomatoes, mozzarella & a tangy lemon-tahini spread in a pan-toasted sub roll with a side Caesar salad that was also vegan.
Everything was delicious and the service was great. One of the perks is that they serve breakfast all day.
Richmond, Virginia has a booming food scene and it can be difficult to decide where to eat among all the choices. However, Stella's is a great bet that almost everyone will love. Described as "Rustic and Modern Greek Cuisine", their menu has favorites like hummus and moussaka but also generalizes to Mediterranean flavors like pastas and fresh seafood.
I've never had a bad meal here -- lunch, dinner, or Sunday brunch -- and their specials are fresh, creative, and worth every calorie. It's not the cheapest place in town (entrees range from $15-25), but for the quality of their dishes, it can't be beat.
The restaurant is tucked in a residential neighborhood and packed with locals, so reservations are suggested, especially on weekends. During the week, you may be able to walk in, especially if you're willing to be seated at the large "community" table they have in the center of the restaurant, which seats about 20 people in total and is a fun way to interact with other diners.
Options for vegetarians as well.
While staying at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond is one way to enjoy the city's turn-of-the-century history, you can have much of the same experience by simply heading to LeMaire restaurant (inside) in the evening. Stop to take a picture of the grand staircase from "Gone With the Wind" and then pop into LeMaire.
You can absolutely have a great meal if you stay for dinner, but the restaurant's best secret is their happy hour. You can order appetizers at a surprisingly great place and along with the bar snacks, you can actually make a small meal out of them. Additionally, they have great drink specials on weekdays (early evenings).
By all means, dress up just a bit. This is a classy bar, and though I've never seen them turn away anyone wearing jeans and a t-shirt, half of the fun is living it up a little. You'll find a large selection of beverages available. The mint juleps are a wonderful southern treat and there are plenty of bourbons to choose from or select from their great martini list.
There's no such thing as a bad doughnut, but there are varying degrees of greatness and Country Style Doughnuts are the best in Richmond. Unlike the trendier shops downtown, Country Style doesn't try to come up with weird or unique flavors and instead focuses on quality doughnuts in traditional favorites, like jelly, cream-filled, coconut, and chocolate-glazed. All are good, and at $1 each, it's easy enough to sample a few to decide which is your favorite (I go for the peanut!).
The store is open 24 hours a day, so head whenever you get the munchies and be sure to stop by on your way to/from the airport, which is just down the street.
I only recently discovered The Naked Onion, yet I’ve eaten more than half their menu already. The star of their menu is the bahn mi sandwich, provided with pork belly, pork tenderloin, or in a vegetarian version. The other sandwiches are pretty good too, but if you only want one sandwich, that's the one to get.
There’s not really anywhere to eat inside but there's a picnic table or two out front. Otherwise grab take-out and go picnic at Maymont Park or Belle Isle. Be aware that their drinks are very expensive -- I know drinks are expensive at all restaurants, but the Naked Onion seems to take it to an even higher level.
If you head here for dinner, you can expect to wait for a table quite awhile and hurried service. The food's really good, so it can be justifiable, but in my opinion you can get the same great pork at breakfast (omelet) or lunch (Cuban sandwich). If you do wait it out, plan on ordering a few courses because they're all good and make great leftovers!
