Villages in Ares del Maestre
Ares del Maestre
Ares del Maestre, is located in the foothills of the Iberian System, presenting a steep relief, characterized by a hilly landscape. Located on a hill, it is crowned by the remains of a Templar castle, that constitutes a magnificent watchtower over the mountainous landscape. Another interesting place is the old fish market, a gothic building where you can find the city hall, the prisons from the 13th century and the old doors of the wall.
Villages in Villafranca del Cid
Vilafranca del Cid
It is a municipality of the region of Castellón, located in the region of Alto Maestrazgo. It is a few kilometers away from La Iglesuela del Cid, a charming town. This one is bigger and less charming, since it has more than 2500 inhabitants. Places of interest: some chapels, the church of El Salvador, a renaissance monument built between 1567 and 1572, under the management of Raimón Pertusa and Pere Maseres. It is one of the best monuments of the 16th century in Valencia. The Virgen del Llosar chapel is also interesting, dedicated to this virgin and patron saint of this place. The Portal de San Roque belongs to the 14th century, and it is the only remains of the walls built in the reign of Peter IV.
Villages in Benasal
Benasal is a municipality of Castellón, that belongs to the region of Alto Maestrazgo and has about 1500 inhabitants. The church Asunción de la Virgen of the 18th century is quite interesting. It preserves a good baroque facade, as well as an important gold and silver articles, religious ornament and medieval, such as the "Lecho de la Virgen", the altarpiece and a Last Supper that the sculptor, José Gozalbo, made in iron. You have to walk the "La Mola" complex, primitive nucleus of the population where we can still see a wall and the towers of Garcès, Redona, de la Presó, and an entry to the building with a traditional Arab arch. La Mola gives way to the old historic area named "Els Carrerons", formed by narrow streets with some of the oldest houses of the town. You can see there well preserved noble mansions of the 18th century, like the Sánchez de Cotanda (which preserves two baroque doors of the 18th century), Matutano y Grau; el Forn de Dal, and the so called La Mola building, with an arch of the primitive walls. Today, in La Mola you can find the archeology museum "Alt Maestrat" and the Carles Salvador i Gimeno. This town is famous in Valencia, especially for its Balneario de la Fuente En-Segures, which preserves pieces of modernist architecture of the beginning of the 20th Century.
