Castles in Barranquilla
Castillo de Salgar
(10)
Barranquilla is the fourth most populated city in Colombia, after Bogota, Medellin and Cali, and is the capital of the Atlantic province in the north of the country. 20 minutes from Baranquilla is the Castillo de Salgar built by the Spaniards in 1848 on the ruins of the older fort of San Antonio. It is located at a site that was considered very important and strategic to spot smugglers' vessels that were trying to avoid paying taxes. Later the office moved to Barranquilla and the castle become obsolete and was abandoned for over 60 years. In 1940 it was restored to be used as a recreational center by the Ministry of Education. Finally, in the late twentieth century, the castle was restored and is now used as a center for cultural exhibitions.

Pumarejo Bridge
(6)
The Pumarejo bridge is a structure that crosses the Magdalena river 20 kilometers from its mouth in the Caribbean Sea. It connects the city of Barranquilla, in the northern part of Colombia, with Sitionuevo. Officially, the bridge is known as "Laureano Gomez" but everybody calls it by the name of its creator, Alberto Pumarejo, a Colombian liberal politician who was born in Barranquilla, and grew up to be mayor of the city. The bridge was designed by the Italian Ricardo Morantti and was inaugurated in 1974, by President Misael Pastrana Borrero. There is currently a project to build another bridge next to the current one, that will connect Barranquilla with Santa Marta. The new bridge will be 2247 meters long and have 990 meters of viaduct connections and access, as well as two three-lane carriageways on each side. Once the new bridge - which will be officially named after Pumarejo - is up and running, the former will be demolished.
