La Roque-Gageac is a strange village embedded in a cliff on the banks of the Dordogne River. It has a fantastic location, so it's ben occupied by man since the prehistoric era. There are still some remains from the Gallo-Roman era, including a well and part of a villa. In about the year 850 AD, the inhabitants of the area sought refuge in these cliffs for protection from the Vikings. Today, the town is truly charming, with medieval houses and a castle. You can see the barges, the traditional craft of the Dordogne, on the river. Once a freight boat, they are now used for tourism.
