Costa Smeralda

Walking around any corner of the Emerald Coast is magnificent. Of course it is impossible to do it all with just a few weeks of vacation, but if you're around here and you have some time, you definitely should. My friends and I got up every morning to make short excursions to corners of this paradise that aren´t in the guides. We walked from the bay that is formed in the area of Olbia - another area that is not a waste of time.
Islands in Olbia
Tavolara Island
(5)
Tavolara is a rocky island in the Tyrrhenian Sea a few kilometers off the coast of Sardinia. You can catch ferries to Tavolara from various ports along the Costa Smeralda: Golfo Arancia, Olbia, and Porto San Paolo. The island has housed a NATO military base since 1962 and the majority of the island is off limits to tourists. The main place to visit is a rocky promontory about 1km. long toward the south of the island where there are some homes, a cemetery, restaurants, and some truly amazing beaches perfect for diving.

For me one of the best beaches I visited in Sardinia, I went in June and it is a very quiet beach and there is no urban area nearby, but has a lovely beach bar. It is accessed from the road Olbia - Arzachena , if you go from Olbia 2nd Gulf Outlet Aranzi, follow the road, pass a viewpoint where you can stop and snap photos, you get to a roundabout big enough for what we are accustomed to in Sardinia, and see a path to reach the ground, pointing towards the beach, all the way to a type of park and through the tunnel to the beach. From Olbia the drive takes about 20 minutes . If you get dizzy easily be careful because the road has many curves, but it worth it, as it is an interesting place, a tunnel under the train tracks.

Port of Olbia

From this port you can catch "ferries" to various parts of the island. This is used more for leaving Sardinia and to reach Genoa and the Italian peninsula. If you want to get a boat or ferry for trips within the island or even to go to Corsica, the neighboring island, there are other places on the island with smaller ports which are more comfortable. This is the one most used to get to and from Sardinia and Italy, so there are crowds are also many inconveniences. Queues, delays and hassle is what awaits you here, but .... Well, this is one of the charms of the Italians ...

Olbia Old Town

Although Olbia is a fairly modern city with a huge commercial and industrial port, in certain areas the Sardinian architectural charm has been preserved. Olbia, called "happy city" by the Greeks, was founded by the Carthaginians. Later, in the third century, the Romans took its magnificent natural harbor to develop a large business between North Africa, Hispania (Spain), the Gaul (France), and of course the Italian peninsula. You can find the heart of the city at the junction where Corso Umberto meets Corso Vittorio Emanuele where you can see the city hall, built in 1932, where many of the locals go for a stroll. There are several nice places, like Queen Margaret and Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, and I really liked the San Paolo church, with its striking granite facade and multicolored dome with notable Arab influence.
Castles in Olbia
Pedres Castle

Going in the direction of Olbia, a few kilometres before you arrive you'll see a granite tower on the left. This is all that remains of the Castle of Pedres. Intrigued, we ventured towards the tower. There aren't many steps, but they are quite steep, and rise through dense vegetation. Take care - they aren't regular, and some are broken. But from the top, you can enjoy a lovely view across the valley. Too bad that on the day we went, the wind was so strong ...

Spiaggia Lu Litarroni
(1)
Spiaggia Lu Litarroni is a beach in Aglientu on the road that connects Vignola Mare to Santa Teresa di Gallura. When you see the dark brown sign, you've arrived. The parking is paid in summer, but it's free the rest of the year. To reach the beach from the parking lot, you have to walk about 5 minutes through a pine forest before ending up at a beautiful white sand beach that's almost always empty. There are beach chairs for rent, but only on a small part of the beach. The water is crystal clear. It's popular with surfers and kite-surfers during summer.

Spiaggia di Porto Istana

For many years, I've visited Sardinia and had fascinating experiences. With its crystal clear sea, and white sandy beaches are just like tropical beaches. As you can see in these photos, Beach Porto Istana is a real paradise to see. Being part of the commune of Olbia, the beach is in northeastern Sardinia. On the tip of Cape Ceraso, Porto Istana consists of several bays separated by rocks and vegetation, commonly called the first beach, Second Beach, Third Beach, and fourth beach, starting from the north. Each of these beaches has the characteristics of a paradise with fine, white sand and crystalline sea, the sun creates special colors ranging from transparent to light or dark blue.
