Nature Reserves in Litchfield
Topsmead State Forest
Just minutes from the upscale, picturesque town center of Litchfield, down winding rural roads that would feel lonely if the views weren't so pleasing, hides one of Connecticut’s most charming historic properties. Topsmead State Forest’s 511 acres of trees and trails surround a 1920s Tudor house and gardens, simultaneously understated and grand. The house began its life as the summer cottage of Waterbury brass heiress Edith Morton Chase, and her desire to create a peaceful country retreat for herself and close friends is evident in the careful detailing of the home and grounds. Guided tours are available from June to October, but even when the house is closed, Topsmead State Forest is a quiet yet unforgettable place to spend an hour or a day.
