Nature Reserves in Big Pine Key
Bahia Honda State Park
Walking the Overseas Highway (Highway 1) cross Honda Bay to a nature park with a beach of white sand and crystal clear waters - the same as those of any Caribbean island. Besides the beach, near the park entrance, there are several sea-related activities, such as snorkeling and kayaking, etc. To enter the park it is the regular price for any U.S. park is $8/car and $2/bike (this good price helps to preserve these precious places). Here you can enjoy nature as if you were the first person to arrive there. An amazing place.
Unusual Places in Big Pine Key
Big Pine Key
In Big Pine Key, one of the biggest keys of Florida lives a peculiar deer that is smaller than normal and especially much more friendly than other deer. Since they have no predators, and since the island has always been non-threatening, you can approach the deer regardless. After stopping the car on the road near the area where they live and waiting a few minutes, it is common to see herds of deer coming to the car and browsing around. It's always nice to see animals so confident, and they are quite handsome to look at. The area is a nature reserve, so you'd better follow the signs they give you, such as speed limit, not to feed the animals, etc ... and enjoy this haven of peace in the middle of the Florida wilderness.
Of Touristic Interest in Big Pine Key
Your charming host, Jorge, is a humble, admirable man with a thousand stories to tell. He's a crazy dreamer who built his own boat to go sailing aimlessly, and his home is a real earthly paradise, surrounded by friendly deer that you can feed and breathtaking scenery. The nearby canals that empty into the sea make an amazing spot for an afternoon's snorkeling, surrounded by dolphins, and in the cabin you'll feel right at home, grilling delicious burgers and relaxing. You can lie in a hammock and watch the sunset after a relaxing tour around the island on the boat. A perfect weekend!
