Stalheim Hotel overlooks a steep mountain valley near the town of Voss. The hotel itself does not stand out for its luxury or refinement, but for the views that can be admired from the yard and some rooms. There are two roads leading to the hotel, but that one that really stands out is known as Stalheimskleivane, In fact, this steep road is one of the main attractions of Norway in a nutshell and its traffic is reserved for tour buses.
The Scandic Hotel Bergen is located close to the city's funicular train and the shopping area. It is a large hotel with 254 rooms decorated in dark colours and elegant style. When I passed through Norway last year, we ate dinner at this hotel on our second day. The buffet food didn't have much variety, but it was all pretty good.
I toured through the Fjords in Norway this summer. The first stop was Bergen, at the Thon Bergen Airport Hotel, picked by the tour company. We only spent one night in this hotel. We had a triple room, which was actually a double with an extra bed, so it was a little small. The hotel was decorated in reds and purples, very original. The bathroom had a Scandinavian style shower (no tub). Since this was the first we had seen, we found it funny. Scandinavian showers are at ground level and have a curtain. When you shower, water gets all over the bathroom floor, but since they're heated, they dry quickly. The TV in the room was small and CRT. There were no Spanish channels. The room had an iron and a kettle. For me, the worst thing about the hotel was its location, near the airport. Being so far from the city, you couldn't go for a walk after dinner. Also we had dinner at 7 pm, at which time we could have visited the city, but they had to tease us.
The third stop on the route I did this summer was the Norwegian Fjords. We stayed at the Rica Sunnfjord Hotel for two nights. The triple room was actually a double room with a small sofa bed. This hotel was one of the ones we liked out of the available hotels on the route we had chosen. He was in the center of Forde, which allowed us to meet people. It also has a small pool and a sauna, so the first day of the trip we just came back and enjoyed the hotel. The room was comfortable and spacious. It had a Scandinavian shower. The only thing I did not like is that the floor of the room had carpet and I didn't like it at all. Although I must say that the carpet was very colorful.
The Hotel Scandic Ørnen is very practical if you arrive in Bergen by train for one night only, as it is not in the center, although everything is close by. It is a modern and avant-garde design hotel. I stayed on the last floor and had a private terrace, but I could not take advantage of it due to rain. The room had a Nespresso machine, and several capsules so you could have your coffee, and the headboard of the bed was a spectacular photograph. The hotel is large, with extensive meeting facilities, restaurant, gym, etc. The breakfast was one of the best of my trip to Norway, with chefs preparing fresh dishes.
When we decided to end our tour of Norway with 2 nights in Bergen we decided to stay somewhere a little more expensive and luxurious than where we had been staying (fairly inexpensive cabins and rustic lodgings). Since we were 2 couples, we discovered it was easier and much cheaper to stay in a luxury, fully-equipped apartment on the edge of the water. It was really worth it. It was very spacious with 2 bedrooms, bathroom with shower, washing machine, dryer, kitchen, living room, and 2 balconies with stunning views of the area. It was also very well located and had several supermarkets nearby. We were there in August and the sun was splendid (for those who think that it always rains in Bergen).

The orchard of Norway
After four hard days on the high plateau of fjord land, the sunny gardens of this hostel were the perfect place to relax. The building is a residential school open to tourists in the summer. It is extremely cost effective, has a free sauna and the buffet breakfast is extensive.
It makes a good base to explore Ullensvang. This area, despite being at 60' north, is the Orchard of Norway. The fact filled "Fruit trail" is highly recommended. The first trees were introduced by monks 800 years ago and clergy have had an important role ever since.
Schnee, schnee, schnee!
Plan for a long day of ice and snow. Crossing large snow fields, trying to follow the footsteps left by previous hikers.
The two highlights of the day are the river crossings. There are no bridges. So take off your boots, strip down to your underwear and plunge thigh high into freezing waters as mini icebergs float downstream beside you. Watch young Spanish men weep. It is highly recommended to bring a pair of sandals with straps and hiking poles.
Despite the tough conditions this Nordic scenery offers solitude and a severe beauty.
Arriving at Tyssevassbu we discover the hut warden is sick and has left. However a camaraderie soon builds between the hut inhabitants and we build a fire, fetch water from the frozen lake and perform house keeping tasks. I also try a Wasa Brunost sandwich from the pantry, addictive.
