The picture was taken on top of a Krouchtchovka, a typical house built in the 60's (in Krouchtchov as the name suggests). I found this type of construction all over Eastern Europe. These buildings, built in blocks, are different between countries; in Russia, they are home to the middle classes, while in East Germany, poor people live there.
This three-star hotel is well located. It features a breakfast buffet with a nice pianist playing live music. The bacon at breakfast is delicious, and for three stars, it is quite nice. The price of the hotels in Kiev is expensive and you practically have to pay a 4 or 5 stars rate for a 3 star establishment. The attention of the hotel staff was average. I was in a room on the fifth or sixth floor facing the hotel entrance and from which you could see a beautiful view of the city. Room service is pretty good, I remember having eaten a club sandwich similar to VIPS, but it had some strong Dijon mustard. I had reserved a room with a double bed, but was given a room with 2 beds that I couldn't join together due to a desk. In those days though there was a convention of Coca-Cola executives and all the hotels were full so I had to swallow, do not give me another option. The hotel's decor is pretty typical ugly Ukranian style, it will seem that you are in a hotel of the series "Wonder Years". Overall my rating of 1 to 10 hotel is 7 that I value very well the situation of the hotel. The second time I visited Kiev, through a friend rented an apartment in the center of Kiev paying less than half that in the Hotel.

The capital of Ukraine is also one of the country's top tourist destinations, and there are attractions to suit all tastes -- and the same goes for hotels. Kiev hotels run from converted palaces to cheap and cheerful hostels, and cover almost everything in between. Hotels in Kiev are centered around the downtown area, and there are several dozen options to be found between the main train station on the west and the river on the east. If you are wondering where to stay in Kiev, it's helpful to first decide what neighborhood you want to be in. In the downtown area, for example, hotels running more than US$200 a night are practically next door to Kiev accommodations charging just US$40 a night. Kiev lodging also includes options spread across the countryside, including homes for rent and secluded spas. Places to stay in Kiev generally cost less during the off-season and on weekends, when business travelers are less numerous. It is harder to find Kiev hotel deals during the summer, but with so many lodging options finding someplace affordable is not too hard any time of year.
Note that less expensive lodging in Kiev may not be signed in English, so some of the locally-run establishments may be harder to find. Check out Minube to learn more about Kiev and see what travelers have to say about Ukraine's capital.
