I'll always remember the afternoon in...

I'll always remember the afternoon in that village of former slaves of the Peul, the biggest group across the Sahel, nomadic pastoralists. They are people of great beauty. Those who were their slaves until recently (not many decades ago) have separated and live in their own places, yet retain many of the features of the Peul, like the adornments worn by women. Here there is no wealth, quite the opposite. However, we were invited to tea, such is their hospitality. There were many of us and they could not offer us anything else. Some declined the offer. saying thank you, so as not to put themselves under obligation.
