2 reviews of Cathedral Basilica of Segorbe

Altars made of marble

Declared as a Spanish national monument (Bien de Interes Cultural), there are hardly any remains of the ancient gothic cathedral, the west façade and the towers. The remodeling started in 1791 and was the work of Vicente Gasco. The temple has one aisle, no cross or copula. It does have chapels between the buttresses. The marble altars are what stand out, as well as the paintings or the 16th century choir, or the other one from a century later. In the cloister, the original gothic tracery, the bars from the Valencian shops are especially important, as they enclose the chapels which now is the cathedral

The building more than stands out

This gothic cathedral is the building that currently stands out most in the municipality (together with the two towers and the aqueduct). Although the original construction is from the 15th century, it was remodeled in the 18th century. It is truly one of the most beautiful constructions in Segorbe (despite its simpleness). The cloister stands out, as it’s somewhat peculiar. The floor forms a trapezoid, due to the irregularity of the walls. The cathedral’s museum is also worth a visit.
