The most "shocking" moment we experienced during our trip to Africa was in Congo Brazzaville when driving through the only road in the forest of Mayombe. It was rainy season and not being paved road, it had become a genuine pool of mud and a serious trap for all inexperienced tourists, whether you were SUVs or trucks. When the water begins to move the cars are completely stuck and sometimes you need call upon more people to get out of the quagmire. The local inhabitants frequently change their place of residence, knowing that thisis going to happen. Some small children stay behind. They spend all day on the road waiting for vehicles to pass, because as soon as you get caught, they offer their help in exchange for money or food.
