Liverpool hosts one of the oldest Chinese communities in all of Europe. The first inhabitants of 'Chinatown' were sailors ve arrived in the 17th century to trade in tea, silk and cotton. Initially, it seems, these sailors lived in port areas between Cleveland Street Square, Pitt Street and Frederick Street. After the war, many took up residence downtown on Nelson and Berry Streets. There are many good restaurants and the typical arches and dragons of most Chinatowns.
