Market of San Francisco El Alto

The small town of San Francisco el Alto is located in the regio of Totonicapán, just 17 kilometers from Quetzaltenango. It is a very quiet village but, on Friday, it has one of the largest markets in the highlands of Guatemala. That is because there are many small villages around with no market. People arrive very early, at about 4 am, and start walking in the direction of San Francisco to sell their vegetables, including beans, corn and carrots. The San Francisco market remains a typically traditional market. While Chichicastenango market is popular with tourists, here you will see that it is nothing like Chichicastenango.
