Built after a miracle

It is said that St Benezet bridge was built after a miracle performed by a shepherd named Benezet. He was brought to Avignon by an angel with a mission to build this bridge and it is said that the raising of a gargantuan stone convinced officials of the time. The bridge had 2 arches and was completed in 1185, the chapel is twelfth-century and contained the tomb of the pastor of Benezet, canonized by the Pope. It is said that many miracles took place here but the Rhone took the bridge and it was destroyed several times, so there's nothing left of the grave of the saint. However, there are beautiful views over the river.
