Fort that is now a hotel and Property of Public Interest
The Fort of San Juan Bautista (Forte de S. João Baptista) is the "run" for excellence in Vila do Conde. It is situated outside the heart of town, in the beach area and entertainment zone. The fort was constructed in the late 16th and early 17th centuries to defend the harbor at the mouth of river Ave has polygonal with 5 bastions at its corners protected by watchtowers. It lost its original function, and it has been changed into a hotel with many pubs and a restaurant and chill out area inside. The structure was declared Property of Public Interest in the year 1963.
