The city grew around a chapel built by Charlemagne in the 10th century and became the Abbey of St. Volusiano. The church and the monastery were embellished in the 13th and 14th centuries. During the wars of religion the church was destroyed and was rebuilt in the XVII. century. The prefecture was located next to the abbey buildings, and was partially destroyed becuase of a fire in 1804. Coming out of the medieval period church prints remained in the building of the abbay as well as the crypt base on the south wall of the nave, and a beautiful gate dating from the XII. Inside, the magnificent statues were brought from the Abbey of sto.
