1 review of The Misericórdia Church

The most important baroque temple in Guarda

This monument is the most important Baroque building to be found in Guarda. It is the Church of the Misericordia, and on the wall there is a mural of Joao de Alemida. Although it was built during the 17th Century, its current appearance resembles more the 18th Century. The facade of the church, vertical orientation, is flanked by two slender bell towers, topped with balustrades and pinnacles. The façade features multiple windows and is framed in granite, and the brand new coat of João V is on the cover, as well as the image of the patron saint, the Virgen da Misericordia, in a niche. The interior features a single nave with a wooden roof, with a separate altar by a triumphal arch, and choir loft at the feet.
