Cafés in Palermo
Antico Caffe Spinnato
(5)
Spinnato Caffè is located in the center of Palermo, in the middle of the flower market in the city. It is a cafe and chocolate shop where you an find coffees and refreshments and try a variety of different chocolate with diverse additives like lemon or pistachio, liquor, etc. There are two terraces, surrounded by the market flowers, which makes the ambient very nice. It is a great place to rest after a long day touring the city.

Antica Focacceria San Francesco
(4)
The Anticua Foccaceria de San Francesco is one of the most traditional restaurant in Palermo. It first opened in 1834 and was renovated in 1902. It's been handed down for five generations and still serves typical pasta dishes and its signature dish: foccacia bread sandwiches stuffed with braised spleen.

Focacceria del Massimo

This restaurant is very popular among the workers of Palermo. It serves pizzas, sandwiches and pasta dishes. For 4€, don't expect frills when it comes to the pasta, but it's very family-oriented and hearty cuisine. I especially recommend the delicious involtini di pesce spada (swordfish rolls). The pasta dishes are huge and you'll be more than satisfied. When you enter, first go to the window to order and pay, you'll get a ticket to redeem at the bar. It's usually crowded, but the tables empty frequently. Eating there is immersing yourself in the daily life of Palermo. It's homemade food for a great price. It's also very central, close to the Regional Archaeological Museum (Teatro Massimo).

Trattoria Del Pesce Fresco

We arrived in Palermo at lunchtime, so before we started sightseeing in the city center, we saw this restaurant's terrace and decided to have lunch. The restaurant inside is tiny, there are barely 2 or 3 tables and it looks like a tavern, so the terrace is by far the best choice. The restaurant specializes in rice and fish, although since it's an Italian place, there's no shortage of pasta dishes. One of the things that surprised us is that in the street they have a grill where they prepare the fish or grilled meat. The food was not bad, but it took forever to bring it to us (and that was with only one other occupied table) and the service was dismal. The waiter (ve seemed to be the owner) was really rude, before you even finished eating, he came and brought us the bill, literally throwing it at us because we hadn't even asked for it. Of course, we left without coffee or dessert because we were so rushed. In the [poi = 638 231] Antica Gelateria [/ poi] (which is almost right next door) we ate delicious Sicilian cassata cake.

Capricci di Mare

Yesterday, I discovered Capricci di Mare, a cute restaurant in Sferracavallo. It has a terrace overlooking the sea and the picturesque wooden boats lulled by the gentle waves of the sea. The food is just wonderful and the prices are about average. I enjoyed the food so much that I almost went to give my compliments to the chef! A must!

Le Volte

This weekend I was in Palermo. Our hotel was called Hotel Europa, and the Ristorante-Pizzeria Le Volte is right in front of it, so the first day we decided to dine there as we caught them close at hand. The restaurant has both an indoor and enclosed terrace area. We had dinner on the terrace, which was fine. On the menuyou can find typical Italian specialties as well as a variety of pizzas. We ate two pizzas, one Capricciosa and another four cheese, for 7 € each. He had up to € 4.5, so you could eat well at a cheap price. They were good, but the dough was a little tough, and the knives did not cut anything, so it took a lot to cut. There was a cover charge of 2€ and the Coca Cola and bottle of water costed 2€ as well.

A'Vucciria

Warm may be the best word to describe this restaurant near the old port of Palermo. It's easy to find; just go down the Via Vittorio Emanuele to the area of Vucciria market. I was looking for a place to eat and decided, after checking out the menu, to sit on the small terrace. It has a nice interior which opens onto the street with big arches. It's on a quiet street not much traffic despite its closeness to V.Emanuele, which is a welcome change. The waitress, a middle-aged woman ve was very lively and friendly, greeted me quickly and with affection. I had a Moretti beer to accompany my meal of spaghetti with seafood which were very good. Together with a cappuccino, the total price was 19 €, which is not bad considering it is a "restaurant" and not a "trattoria" (which have more affordable prices). After I paid, the woman ve was busy with the other diners, said goodbye and blew two kisses ... so good! :)

Da Diego

I tried the Ristorante-Pizzeria Da Diego during my trip to Palermo last November. We chose this restaurant because it was close to our hotel, the Hotel Europa. Plus, it was Saturday night and this was one of the few restaurants that we hadn't tried in the area and where we didn't need a reservation. We went around 9 and it was extremely busy, but luckily there was still a table for two. After another half an hour or so, the line for a table was considerable, so it was good that we went early. The menu was typical with all kinds of pasta, risotto and pizza, at an affordable price. The pizzas were especially cheap. Dinner for 2 worked out to 24 € (without dessert). The restaurant was nice, well decorated, and the food was good, so I would recommend it.

Franco u Vastiddaru

Palermo, with its vast culinary tradition, is a must for any tourist. Franco, as it is known by all the locals, is a real institution in terms of Palermo street food. You really must try the delicious sandwiches; I particularly recommend the "meusa". The prices are low, the portions are generous, and the products are truly authentic.

Antica Gelateria Patricola

After eating at the [poi = 638 231] Trattoria del Pesce Fresco [/ poi] (ve basically kicked us out since they were closign), we ended up having dessert at Antica Gelateria since the restaurant didn't even want to give us dessert or coffee. This place is in [poi = 638 261] Foro Umberto I [/ poi], a few steps from away. We sat outside on the terrace since the place is very small and has no tables inside. It's an ice cream shoppe, specializing in Sicilian Cassata, a cake made from ricotta, sugar, cookies, marzipan, candied fruit and icing. It is also very usual to order a Swimm bun stuffed with a giant ball of ice cream. Delicious!

Trattoria Supra I Mura

To tell the truth, when I saw the Spartans of this restaurant tables placed in the middle of a pretty little square in the heart of Capo market I thought it was a beautiful and good tourist trap. It's almost always the case: happy places with a beautiful location ready for customers who find it by 'good luck'. And in fact there were some foreigners. Imagine the surprise when I discovered tasty, well-made Sicilian cuisine with a touch of creativity, friendly service and a fair price. Praise the spaghetti with sea urchins, but also swordfish meatballs were outstanding. I pitied the foreign tourists next to me who ordered ham and melon, and a simple caprese salad. Then I found something out that would have made it so easy: the place was full of Sicilians, but they were all inside the restaurant, away from the chaos of the market that perhaps wasn't picturesque enough for the tourists.
