The last day that we walked along the Alentejo, we walked along the coast. It was indeed spectacular. We ended up having dinner in a great restaurant in Vila Nova dos Fontes. La Tasca do Celso is a typical Alentejo food restaurant, where meat and fish are the house specialty. The portions are huge and the service is exceptional. The restaurant was quite full, and it was already past ten in the evening. The town is full of beach tourism and the restaurant is one of the best in town.
Serpa comes highly recommended. The restaurant Pedra de Sal is one of the best known in the city. Its fame has been well earned. It is very typically decorated. Upon entering the restaurant you will be greeted by a lovely garden that invites you further in, where the tables are ready and waiting for you. The food is typical Alentejo and the specialty is meat. I remember taking an excellent picanha and some delicious chips. The last time I was there, I remember watching Chelsea in the semi-final of the Champions League...
It's a very famous seafood restaurant by the size and quality of the seafood served. It isn't surprising to find a row to sample the delights that "The Christ" has to offer. You can also order dishes like "Bacalao Dourado" or "Ox" (giant crab), and if you do not eat seafood, they serve very good meat. No one is left hungry in "The Christ". Also, you can enjoy the church that gives the name to the restaurant.
At the top of the village, outside of the walled area, rises this special place, which is next to a hotel, with views of Alqueva and surrounding areas. The site has a homely feel that I love. At first we were unsure, as there were not many people in the place, but were soon blown away by the food.. Rarely have I eaten better in a place. The food was delicious and varied, and it still makes my mouth water now when I think about it...
Considered one of the best restaurants in Évora, this traditional restaurant offers a feast for one´s palate. Among its most famous dishes include the 'Quail with paio Ovos' and 'Pies galinha'. As a main course, one can try the the 'Borrego Assado forno not' the 'Lombinhos of Javali with applesauce' and 'Convento da Cartuxa partridge'. For dessert, be sure to try the 'Queijadas Evora'. The Restaurant also has fine Portuguese wines to offer customers.
One of the best surprises on our holiday to Portugal was the restaurant "O Arco" in Santiago do Cacem. We travelled the Algarve to Lisbon and we stopped in this town to eat. I asked a local and he very kindly recommended O Arco. He pointed out the place and warned us about the portion size, which was plentiful. Although the location of "O Arco" with a BP petrol station is not very glamorous, what matters is the good food at a good price. In the picture you can see what we ordered for four people (Anna, the friendly waitress recommended that we order nothing else): baked cod (one of the best cod I've ever eaten in my life, and this fish is one of my favorite), rice with roast duck (according to my wife, one of the best dishes in years) and pork tenderloin with cream (with fried egg on top, if there wasn't enough). In addition to the dish to the right, rice chips and white trim. Everything tasted great and the price had some wine included: € 33.20! Absolutely recommended.
The cataplana fish was very good and the terrace was nice. Careful when you sit at the table, there is bread, cheese, olives, and they don´t ask you if you ordered it. IF you don´t want it, tell them no, or else they charge you.
I've been several times, I love Portuguese cuisine and at this restaurant you can eat well, get a good grilled cod and some exquisite tigers shrimp, traditional Portuguese desserts also like ciricaia, baba do camelo ...., in short I recommend it, and in summer there's a terrace overlooking the river sever and its natural pools, it seems like you're in Amsterdam canal.
It is a restaurant that is in the heart of the town, Villa Viçosa, about 45 km from Badajoz, and you may be surprised because apart from having acceptable prices there is fusion cuisine between Spain and Portugal. The chef is an artist of the stature of fruits and makes amazing sculptures out of food. Try it, you won´t be disappointed.
The Restaurant Vauban is a different place to enjoy different food, in Évora. It's a learning place, let me explain. This Restaurant is located in a School that provides Professional Courses, and one of them is a Technical Course to learn how to cook, how to prepare food and how to present your food properly on the plate, and also how to serve at tables. And the people that study that course are the people who serve you and cook for you when you go to that Restaurant. So, as you can imagine, you'll get to eat really fancy food, so nicely presented, and in a small quantity. They get inspired by the Portuguese food and also try to create different ideas, and the combination is amazing. I went there one day for lunch, and I'm not the kind of person who enjoys this refined and exaggerated things, but the food was really yummy! So delicious, and the deserts... oh my! So if you'd like to go and try something different, please visit this Restaurant, you'll find it in the "EPRAL Building, Urbanizaçao da Muralha". I hope you like it!
The Café Alentejo, next to Évora's central square, is a good option for regaining your strength midway through a city tour. The menu is not very varied, but it does contain all the typical Alentejo specialties worth tasting. As is tradition in Portugal, the portions are plentiful, so be careful or you'll end up with leftovers.
