The Nueva Taberna Plaza Mayor restaurant reopened its doors in March 2011 with a completely renovated image and very modern facilities.
The bar is located on the ground floor and has a very modern decor with 8 or 10 tables along the bar, towards the back is a staircase leading to the first floor, which has been moved and now on the upper floor there is no longer the roof space that acted as a terrace from which you could see the floor below.
It has kept the glass windows that represent the Palencia agricultural and livestock calendar, and of the rest nothing remains, being that everything is brand new: tiles, chairs, tables, crockery, cutlery, tablecloths ... even the menu is new.
The good news is that they have retained our special menu that we like so much. They have now raised the prices a bit: it is 23 euros per person and is totally worth it.
The menu includes for starters tasting of different dishes:
- Assortment of Iberian pig starters with: a plate of Iberian ham, a plate of Iberian pork and a dish with Iberian chorizo, Iberian Saucisson and Palencia Cerrato cheese.
- Warm escabeche salad (new)
- Cod Carpaccio with open tomato sandwiches (this is also new; it wasn’t on the menu before).
- Fried calamari.
- Grilled red king prawns (There was king prawns and prawns before, but not in the salad or cod Carpaccio).
Then everyone chooses their preference for the main course, among which were: roast suckling pig (special that day), grilled entrecote, grilled baby lamb chops, Milanese chicken cordon bleu, house special scallops and fish, which that particular day were: turbot, sea bass and gilt-head bream.
The desserts are entirely homemade and this time there was a choice: chocolate cake, cheesecake, pudding, crème caramel, rice pudding or fruit. Also on the menu, was coffee, drinks and bread.
Personally, I think few restaurants in Palencia offer this amount of food for just 23 euros. Also, being that it has recently opened, I think it’s worth a visit!
I have gone many times to have some wine and nibble on some squid, in my opinion it is the best in Palencia, and I am always at the bar. But the other day I went to eat at the restaurant and it left me quite surprised. It is cheap, this is true, but as they bring the dishes you begin to realize why. The food very good, service very friendly and efficient and the desserts are delicious. Specifically I will recommend the sirloin with foie, I got a piece that was 4cm thick and very undercooked.
We found this place on the way to the airport and the truth is that we loved it. The premises is simple, it has modern decor which is predominantly white and black. The cuisine is based on tapas-style starters and main courses based on meat. They have a daily menu that costs 12€ which includes 2 dishes, a drink and dessert. Worth trying with tapas, the tortilla is delicious. The price is very good.
Our latest discovery in Palencia was the Bar La Balastera, in Asturias Avenue just off one of the entrances to the city (area known as electrolysis or Barrio San Antonio). It has a very varied menu with main dishes, snacks, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and best of all, the specialty 'eggs broken' in different ways. In our case five of us were having dinner: 2 burgers complete with egg, 2 sandwiches Balastera, one hot dog with bacon and cheese and some scrambled eggs with potatoes and 'jijas'. It came to 5.00 € per person including drinks . One recommendation: If you intend to go to dinner one night on Friday or Saturday, I highly recommend arriving early for dinner (about 21.30 hours). Otherwise you won't find a table.
When it comes to tapas it is best to ask at each place and certainly here what is absolutely essential is a ration of bravas, nothing to do with any bravas that you have had at other places. Also they have a great Galician octopus, I think it's the only place outside of Galicia where I would ask for it, it is well cooked and well seasoned. The only thing I missed in this place were good rock mussels steamed ...
One of the best restaurant in Palencia. Lucio is a professional and it shows. There is quality service and good ambiance. There is a dessert of white chocolate with french toast which is amazing and also a tenderloin with foie which I recommended for people who can appreciate a good restaurant
One of my favorite bars in terms of tapas in Palencia is Bar Pharaon, this weekend some friends came taking advantage Asturian tapas I took them to this bar as it is always a hit. It does not usually disappoint anyone because on the one hand they usually love its decoration in ancient Egypt, but of course there is a downside, which is the amount of people there and often cost a lot to find a free table or else a piece of bar where you can order.
Dinner was great!! Transylvania opened its doors in 2009, becoming a benchmark for all of Palencia. At the time of tapas is always crowded and has also participated in several competitions of tapas and kebabs that have occurred in the city of Palencia. But for me the best thing that they happen to have are the dinners where they have a large and wonderfully varied menu of snacks, sandwiches, burgers or hot dogs, and it also has fantastic multiple servings. I recommend it!
It has a great tapas! The Duke Bar is located in the heart of the city of Palencia, to be more accurate it is in Bigar Center Square which is opposite the Plaza de Abilio Calderon and next to the Plaza Mayor which is less than 200 meters away. The inside of the bar has about 10 tables and chairs and other high tables with stools. Besides they are always offering a wide range of tapas, putting lids on a tray so that everyone can choose whatever tapa they prefer. I recommend coming here if you are in the area.
I have known of this bar since I was a child, the outside doesn't say much, but watch on Sundays! If you arrive a little late you can't even get in!! every day they put pinchos for you to snack and the price is a bargain because it is out of the center! I encourage all who come to the new area for tapas (Moesia, my backyard ...) be sure to visit this bar, it does not disappoint!

The "Mano" is bar-restaurant located in the heart of the capital Palencia. If is found right next to the Church of the Company, i.e. where the patron saint of "Palencia de Virgen de la Calle" is. Also the street "La Cestilla" is perpendicular and crosses the main street (Calle Mayor) of Palencia. The inside is decorated like a typical bar, but best of all it is very popular because they give free tapas, such as some other bars in town also do. There are many portions and things to pick at, also has a small dining area for all types of events.
The truth is that what best defines the Café Bar JR is that it is a neighborhood with seafood restaurants, since you can eat the best fresh seafood right in the neighborhood of Ave Maria Palencia. It's worth going at the time of vermouth and you always can enjoy the yarns scampi, potato pancakes with sausage rolled up snails to sea. We have dined a few times here in the summer terraces which is great, although we usually only order some of their rations as fresh prawns, baby squid or barnacles. I recommend coming if you are in the area.
One of my favourite restaurants in Palencia is Papareschi restaurant. It is found in the Paseo de la Huerta Guadián just off Park Hall of Isabel II and the most crowded bar area of the city, just like the old part. For me it is the best pizzeria in Palencia, with delicious thin crusts and all-natural ingredients, my favourite is "Porki" pizza which is made up of serrano ham and chorizo and is deliiiiiiicious! I assure you ... Furthermore, seeing as they do home delivery I mist prefer to get my pizza from here rather than typical Telepizzas or Pizza Mobile or others... What can I recommend from its varied menu? Well when I go I always ask my friends the same thing: Spaguettis carbonara, pizza, any of their risotto, lasagna, etc ...
One of the bars with the most people at the time of tapas is undoubtedly the Managua bar because their portions are great and the price too. In my case I usually go on Sundays with friends for tapas before eating, and I always order a ration of squid and shrimp ... They are delicious! Besides the rations we always order tapas, for example 15 days ago we got a shrimp tapa.
