Gwennie's has been a very famous restaurant in Anchorage since 1971. The very rustic atmosphere is full of typical things from Alaska, including an old car in the doorway. The walls have pictures and memories of Alaska and one can spend hours looking around at everything. The food isn't anything too special, just typical American cuisine, but the atmosphere alone is worth going.
I love this restaurant. First, because the owner Pepe is from Madrid, and second, because the food is delicious and the atmosphere is great. The decor is very rustic, but still very modern, and the bar is a lot of fun. The views from the restaurant are spectacular over the whole sea of Turnagain Arm. It's a fifteen minute trip to Anchorage and the way along the Seward Highway is spectacular. It's worth getting there to experience.
This place is very original it is a Chocolate factory with the largest chocolate waterfall in the world. Not only do they make chocolate, but they also make preserves and jams made from fruits typical of Alaska, raspberry, blueberry and currant. They offer samples of chocolates and there are large windows to see exactly how they make the chocolates and jams. It is also a shop with many Alaskan souvenirs and food such as salmon, honey and buffalo meat and reindeer. The decor is very rustic and typical of Alaska. This place is worth seeing, if only to try the delicious chocolate. It is also interesting to be ale to see the production methods.
The Sourdough Express Cafe & Bakery (Bakery) is a restaurant where most of the food is organic and homemade. It is located near the port of Homer and is in a rustic cabin. Everything is great and the presentation is veryoriginal. The place has four or five tables and on the walls you will find paintings and pictures that are also sold. I love going to this place to have a drink and relax a bit. It is an oasis in the city center.
Girdwood has a reputation for its high hippy population. It's actually a village where many young people live and the atmosphere is usually very fun and relaxed. One of the best restaurants/pubs in Girdwood is the Silvertip Grill. The food on offer is typical American burgers, soups, potatoes, sandwiches. Simple but good food. On weekends there is always music and it's the place where everyone gets together to have fun.
This is one of the most popular restaurants in Girdwood. During the ski season it's always full of people. It first opened in 1982 but burned down in '87 and was rebuilt. The interior is very rustic and there is a pool table where they hold competitions at the weekend. It serves typical American food; burgers, pizzas, etc.., And they also offer a huge variety of beers. If you go to Girdwood, Chair 5 is one of the places you should visit.
This restaurant is by the road going from Denali to Fairbanks and is the perfect place to stop and eat because there is very little on the way from Anchorage to Fairbanks. The nice thing about this restaurant is that behind it is a small lake where you can go walking or just enjoy the weather. The food, which is typically American, is good for example burgers, pasta, sandwiches, and they do a lovely pizza.
The West Rib Pub and Grill is the best known in Talkeetna. Everyone who comes to climb Mount McKinley (Denali) pass by this restaurant/pub to eat one of the great dishes they have on offer. If you want the best Korean food, you have to follow the local Anchorage Korean community, and they flock to the VIP restaurant. There's a variety of snacks on offer, and each table is brightly decorated. The restaurant is small, and sometimes the service can be slow, but it's worth it to try this delicious food.
The Arctic Bar & Liquor Store is an authentic Alaskan bar where the drinks are strong, the waiter friendly, and the clientele a mix of colorful locals, fishermen, and tourists. With its covered terrace on the pier (always packed), it's a lovely place to warm up with a drink or a good burger.
Skagway's Red Onion Saloon is a curious site as it was an époda brothel during the gold rush. The floor, furniture and an eschatological collection of chamber pots hanging on one of the side walls remain from that time. Nowadays, it is a good place to hang out after a long day of sightseeing with live music and a fun environment. The food and beer are good and the waiters are friendly.
