The Lands End hotel is located on a spit of land in Homer. The place is ideal because from this piece of land you can get to Kachemak Bay. From here you can stroll all around the town and enjoy all the shops and restaurants. In the winter everything is closed but in summer everything is open and there are always many people. The hotel is very large and has a very good restaurant. It also has a beautiful terrace with an amazing view. The rooms are priced depending on the season.
An uninhabited area on the west side of Cook Inlet in Alaska. It is within the Lake Clark National Park. The only places to stay are small huts with no utilities (no electricity, water etc..). You can only get there by plane but there is no airport, so the planes land on the beach when the tide is low. In Silver Salmon, fishing is amazing and bears are everywhere, and so you have to be very careful. It's a worthwhile adventure.
Rivers Edge Resort is one of my favorite hotels in the world, because every room is a little cabin on the banks of the Chena River, it is like having a cottage in the woods. By the river you will go by groups of ducks and People kayaking and a very good restaurant called Chena's. The only thing is that in the summer there are lots of mosquitoes that can be annoying.
The Summit Lake Lodge is a small hotel on the Kenai Peninsula near the town of Moose Pass. The place is beautiful, surrounded by forest next to Summit Lake, at the foot of a mountain. It is only open in the summer and has a very good restaurant and a souvenir shop. The place is very isolated, but if you want a quiet place in the middle of nature then this is perfect.
This hotel is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Anchorage. It was established in 1916 and was one of the first places where people could gather in Anchorage. It was also the first place in Anchorage where you could eat at a restaurant with fine china. The hotel is small but has a special charm. Speaking of charm, it's believed that the hotel is haunted. The first Anchorage police chief died there in 1921 and they say that his ghost still hangs around. I love this hotel because it's such a big part of our city's history.
The Hilton Anchorage was the first big city hotel in the area. The Beatles, the Prince of Wales and many U.S. presidents have stayed here. The interior has many indigenous works of art on display and a very modern lobby. The restaurant is called Hooper Bay Café and it has very good food. Two huge, stuffed bears are exhibited in the lobby. It is one of the most expensive hotels, but it is very central and the views from the rooms are wonderful.
This is one of the new hotels in Anchorage and it is lovely. It is a huge hotel and is situated in the heart of the city. There is a restaurant and bar in the lobby and it has a huge banquet room where you can have dancing parties, conventions and weddings. All their rooms have large windows with views of the sea, the mountains and the city.
Anchorage has several inns, but this is the best known and the most central. The exterior looks like an apartment building, but it's a pretty big hostel with three floors. In the summer it is always full and you can meet lots of international travellers. The rooms are newly and it is located in the centre, so it is very easy to get around the city from there.
This hotel is a famous monument in Anchorage, because it was one of the first luxury hotels in the city. The name comes from Captain James Cook who passed through this area during the 18th century. The hotel has two towers and 4 restaurants which are all really good, the best being the Crow's Nest which is situated in the tallest tower and has lovely views of the city. There is a gym in the basement with a swimming pool. Throughout the hotel, there are many beautiful pieces of art on the walls and the decoration and furnishing is elegant and simple.
The Alyeska Prince Hotel is one of the finest and most luxurious hotels in Alaska and is in the town of Girdwood, south of Anchorage. Alyeska Ski Resort is the largest in the state. The hotel is huge and is completely surrounded by forest and mountains. In the winter you can ski right out your hotel door and beyond. In the summer these same trails offer beautiful views and some exquisite excursions. The hotel has several restaurants and a very good art shops selling typical Alaskan products.
A place to really get away. It can only be reached by plane, since there is no road. Located within the Wrangell St Elias National Park, the cabins are luxurious, the food and the friendly service are also exceptional. All the daily activities are done by plane; bushflying with flying legends Paul Claus and loni habertzeter, hiking, fishing, rafting, hunting, skiing, etc. There is guaranteed sightings of all kinds of wild animals; bears, buffalo, goats, dall sheeps, musk ox, etc. It is highly recommended and very expensive.
Talkeetna, a village north of Anchorage, is known for its artistic and rustic atmosphere. The Swiss Alaska Inn, a small hotel, is in the forest near the town of Talkeetna but far enough to feel isolated. What I liked about this hotel was the service. The owners, Renamary and Vern Rauchenstein, are so friendly and make your stay as comfortable as possible. They have a small restaurant with a combination of typical American food and Swiss / German. It's not very expensive and if you are only staying one or two nights in Talkeetna, this place is worth it.
The Fairview Inn is one of the most interesting places in this very interesting town. It was built in 1923 and which, to this day, remains the most central place in this small town. On the ground floor there is a bar known for its live music and wild west atmosphere, including a bear skin on the roof. Upstairs there are rooms that are available for renting, and which now are being renovated. The building itself looks almost enchanted and is very famous all over Alaska.
This hotel is gorgeous. It's located on the outskirts of the town of Seward, in front of the Resurrection River, near the Glacier exit with the mountains as a backdrop. The rooms are in cabins in the woods with rustic interiors which are comfortable and beautiful. The hotel lobby has some huge impressive tree trunks. When you think of Alaska, this is what comes to mind.
After driving about 60 miles down the spectacular and deserted Denali Highway, I needed a break. I had no idea there were any businesses in the area, but I happened up the Gracious House Lodge which was advertising pie and espresso among other things. I was in luck.
The Gracious House has a few small cabins in the $150/nt range plus other accommodations in Atco trailers, in addition to the fun restaurant/bar covered in dollar bills. I stopped and had a pie and coffee and talked to an affable employee before getting more snacks before taking off.
Gracious House would make a great base for exploring the area since it is about halfway down the Denali Highway and near the scenic Susitna River.
