Heiligenblut is a beautiful town in the mountains, in the valley of Moll, in the region of Carinthia. For centuries it's been a popular pilgrimage because the Church keeps a relic of the supposed blood of Christ. The story goes that a Templar Knight named Briccius brought it there from Constantinople. Hence the name, Heiligenblut, meaning holy blood. The village has tracks to do all kinds of winter sports like skiing, sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing, and even ice climbing.
We leave Cortina d'Ampezzo and go into Austrian territory, in one of the highest valleys of Europe, and certainly one of the most beautiful. The feeling of hunger was taking its toll on our stomach and luckily we saw lots of bikers at Gasthof. This indicated we could eat well and so it was. Typical Austrian food, authentically, completely homemade. If you drive through Austria and you find one of these Gasthof sites, do not hesitate to stop for a meal as the portions are quite generous and the price quite affordable. The show reminded me of Heidi, just lovely.
This quiet Austrian city is located in the southern part of the country. The region's capital is called Carinthia. This capital city is right on the shore of Lake Worth, and very close to Slovenia's border. Due to its nice weather and its lake, many Austrians love going there during the summer months. Also, during the winter, the great snow slopes attract lots of people. As important monument in the city have the theater district of Klagenfurt, Klagenfurt Stadttheater, built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the government of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Klagenfurt held until the arrival of the French troops in 1809 walls with moat surrounding the old town. This is a romantic steppe and popular lake, are both located south of Vienna. The atmosphere of colors in nature in the soft landscapes creates endless panoramas. This reserve is of great importance to the conservation of more than 300 species of birds, which are concentrated in the strip along the lake. For foodies, this region of mild climate, has the best conditions for creating fine wines, on the other hand is its famous cuisine, which is characterized by an innovative mix of tastes and typical traditional flavors. The most important places to visit are: the castle Esteráis, considered the most important cultural monument in the area, and was also the home of Haydn, Monchhof Museum, the Diocesan Museum Eisenstadt, the House of Culture "Infeld", Cathedral San Martin and the Basilica of Frauenkirchen. This area has been the meeting place of different cultures for eight millennia and we can appreciate the evolutionary result of a symbiosis between human activity and the environment. Rural architecture can be seen in the villages and in the nineteenth century palaces of the area - this makes it a place of great cultural interest.
