Roya reaches along the golden sandy coast Beauté. This summer resort became famous in the Belle Époque for its lovely structures. The city is an incredible example of modern architecture inspired by the Brazilian art and the work of Oscar Niemeyer, the architect of Brasilia. Its location on the banks of the Gironde river has created many coves protected from the wind. Between dunes and cliffs, forests of oak and pine trees. Those who knew Royan before the bombing of the Germans during WWII, remember the houses and cottages hidden in the green, huge facades of the Victorian hotels and casinos that mimic baroque palaces. Today the only preserved neighborhoods are in Pontaillac PARC: The House "Le Rêve" (which links legend Emile Zola), the House "Les Campaniles" (inspired by the house of medicine in Rome), the House "Ombre Blanche ", the imposing" Aigue Marine ", the Japanese" Kosiki ", Villa Tanagra, Villa California or The Mainaz. Contrasting follies in Royan. Sheltered Gironde estuary (the biggest in Europe. Royan offers diverse landscapes, from the beaches to the marsh. It is one of the most beautiful cities of the French Atlantic coast.
This church, built in raw concrete and inaugurated in 1958, is characteristic of contemporary architecture. What surprised me during my visit was the special light inside, as well as the height of the vaults. It's actually in danger, as the concrete it's made from degrades very rapidly, and suffers from exposure to the sea air. A lot of work needs to be done to save this monument.
The first thing I discovered in Royan, was this small park located between it's marina and harbor! It's full of beautiful surprises: statues of modern art, a small rose garden, a picnic area etc. We sat down for an oceanfront picnic while there were many shops nearby, on the coast line, in the shade of the trees :) When you wander through Royan, you can't ignore this small, charming zone of greenery and relaxation, it's really a nice place to hang out!
A charming market that will make you feel like a kid in a candy shop! The traders are very nice, and we tried the famous Pineau des Charentes for the first time here, a delicious sweet wine. The market is decorated with silver fish-shaped helium balloons.
A beautiful complex near the city centre, with a cinder track. Inside the building there's a weight room. Football matches are held here, along with running, training, and concerts ... I went running here with my boyfriend, and it was quite nice, but I don't like cinder tracks too much.
Its a place you can not miss in Royan! This is where you can find a very nice bunch of small shops (clothing, accessories, sweets), but also bars and restaurants (for every budget!)! From the port of La Rochelle to the post office a few hundred meters away (about 600 meters) there is a kind of doorway that perfectly separates the city from the beach and links the two. Besides offering a lot of things to do, it's marina is one step away from the beach, the harbor, and the city! Its the nerve center of Royan. I guarantee you won't regret making a small detour!
Le p 'tit Goulu is a candy store in its marina Royan. When you pass by, you can't help feeling attracted by the colors of the small shop. In addition to a wide selection of sweets, the store offers drinks, biscuits, and "dame aux bonbons"; Its very cozy! ;) If you want to enjoy the pleasure of nibbling at the beach or just if like me, you've got a sweet tooth! :p
Arriving near the coast of Royan, do not miss this wonderful carousel :) It's very colorful, full of children and families. The ride is very lively, and is overlooking the harbor, near the beach. If you have children, you won't find a better place to relax while the children play. And if you don't have any children, you can still spend five minutes at this magical place and see mothers going back to their childhood when boarding the carousel. :-)
A group of artists gathered. Something was happening. All the artists were coming together on the Royan streets for several days. Using a variety of media, including video, sculpture and human performances, they created "street art" through which the town could wander and exhibit the displays. The viewer is reinvented in a new context through the reflection in daily life. They pretend that the world may look real, but in practice, there is always a little something that has never been true. There is a fleeting moment in which nothing exists when artists take the opportunity to create a parallel universe from scratch. This is not a typical art show or exhibition. Major Routes is something you can see, touch, feel and smell.
