It's a great place where there's certainly a desert, but all the desert features a well. Perhaps this is what makes them mysterious. The trail begins Zagora and ends in Merzouga. It's very hard because of the bike we had, but it was an experience. Before doing this kind of adventure, you should assess the complicated route first.
Tagounite is a small village on the way to the dunes of Zagora called Tinfou. It's famous for its handmade ceramics ... When you are in Zagora you can stop there and get a ride. Apart from the lovely ceramics that you can buy for gifts , you can also visit the underground kasbah and the Koranic library. This library has books as old as mankind. The underground Kasbah is also amazing. It's a sea of lanes or rather tunnels, but with houses ... It's an underground mud town. :)
The Tinfou Dunes are small dunes near Zagora. If you get to Zagora and you contract a tour guide, you can tell them to bring you to Tinfou because it´s only a few minutes away. Unlike Merzouga, Tinfou has very white sand so it seems less like the true wilderness. If you climb the highest dune you will see what is the full-blown rocky Sahara. Then, if you go to Erg Chebbi Merzouga, you can compare the two and see which one you prefer.
Arriving at Zagora, I got lost, which often happens. The only problem is that having gasoline on a motorcycle is kind of difficult, and how to I refuel? As you can see by the photo, you can find gasoline anywhere. The price per litre won't follow the lack of elegance. I paid 3€/litre (!!!!). And it's not as if I could go look somewhere else.
Subtearranea La Kasbah is a couple kilometers from the village of Zagora Tagounite (you can see more info about this village on my page) There you can tour the labyrinthine trails of this strange yet beautiful site ... Most people in this area are beginning to be black people and their kindness will make you feel at home in this mud bunker.
