Churches in Oviedo
Santa María de Naranco
(72)
A few meters from Oviedo on Monument road, and just a few metres from another unforgettable monument like Santa Maria del Naranco is San Miguel del Lillo, built in Asturian pre-Romanesque style. The surroundings of the church make it seem truly grand. Documents (like those in the CHRONICLE ALBELDENSE) mention that in the year 881 there was a landslide, that affected two-thirds of the construction; if you visit it you can see on the floor markings where it came to. You can only visit the church interior with a guide. It's totally prohibited to take photos, with or without flash. I am a lover of the Romanesque and pre-Romanesque style, this church fascinated me. Not just the building, but its truly magnificent environment. It is one of the places you mustn't miss if you visit Asturias.
Cathedrals in Oviedo
Cathedral of San Salvador
(69)
Gothic church built between the 15th and 16th century. I recommend its tower, Baroque altarpieces, Calustro, Chapter house with Renaissance seating room and holy chamber with relics and a Holy Shroud. The cathedral was built on another from the 9th century. Its a temple where pilgrims come.
Streets in Oviedo
Gascona Street
(48)
This weekend I discovered a new place to eat in Gascon. It has a striking facade that grabs your attention. It has very good atmosphere, and the prices are what makes it the best. We had a portion of ham for €6, grilled shrimp for €6 and a bucket of five beers for €3.50. It was all very good and it fed three people for less than €20. I've been wanting to try one more thing, I really recommend it.
Neighborhoods in Oviedo
Old Town
(47)
The historic center of Oviedo is superb. We arrived at Oviedo in full feast of St. Matthew. 9 days of festivities with lots of events and recitals. This led me to having mixed feelings because on the one hand, the city was organised for a party, but on the other kiosks and stages, set up in different parts of the historical district fully hampered your ability to enjoy the district its planeness.
Gardens in Oviedo
San Francisco Park
(35)
It's one of the hearts of social life in Oviedo, a heart that coincides with its main urban lung, composed of hundreds of trees. Stage of games for children of Oviedo, a meeting place for lovers, leisurely walk for the middle aged, or just a stopping point on the center of Oviedo.
Theaters in Oviedo
Campoamor Theatre
(20)
The Campoamor is one of the most internationally well known buildings in Oviedo, due to the Prince of Asturias Awards that take place there every year. Located in the historical heart of the city, the building occupies the entire block. Today, it is the cultural reference point of Oviedo, owing to it's many concerts, theatre performances, operettas and ballets and, every year from September to December, its opera season, where I was lucky enough to attend a modern performance of Turandot. The theatre seats up to 1440 spectators.

Alto del Naranco

A few kilometers from Oviedo on the road leading to the monuments, we had the opportunity to see one of lesser know parts of Oviedo. Unfortunately we also had the opportunity to witness the ashes being scattered of a person who's last wish was that their families and friends met their to do such. What a person he must have been. We left the car in the parking lot and began a short walk along the path indicated to climb to the top. It is quite difficult but the views are breathtaking. Highly recommended visit.
Squares in Oviedo
Plaza de la Escandalera
(11)
Whenever I go to Oviedo I usually park in an underground car park which is central because it's impossible to leave the main pedestrian shopping streets and the city and is very close to the old town. The square of streets Uria, Pelayo Argüelles and Fruela, and is surrounded by historical buildings such as the legendary Teatro Campoamor or headquarters of the Caja de Ahorros de Asturias, and the Park of San Francisco, a real lung in city. In the center, there's a large ornamental fountain and the sculpture called "Motherhood" by Botero. Another sculpture in the square is "Asturcones" which has 3 bronze horses made by Manolo Valdés. This square was built in the 19th century, and since then has had different names, but curiously left with the name "Escandalera" in commemoration of urban protests that took place there because of the alignment of the first house built on the corner of San Francisco and Fruela.
Squares in Oviedo
Plaza Trascorrales
(17)
This plaza is in the centre of the city of Oviedo, right across from the Cathedral and other iconic plazas in Old Town Oviedo, like Umbrella Square. Parallel to the plaza is Mon Street, the nightlife centre. The central statue of the square represents a donkey distributing dairy milk cans. In the interior of the plaza stands the old building from the square of the fish. It has several restaurants and wineries with terrace seating. There is a popular restaurant calle The Raitán. It's very nice and quiet, and close to all the must-see monuments, an exceptional site for a long walk.

We were intrigued about what we had been told by friends who had visited Oviedo recently. They said that there was nothing to do apart from see the sculptures scattered around the city. Indeed if Oviedo and is pretty by itself, this collection of sculptures further compliments its beauty. We didn't get to see them all, but we'll show youthe ones we did see. Great city.

Woody Allen Statue

Walking around Oviedo, you'll see many statues dedicated to illustrious people, from the city itself and those who are symbolic here. They decorate many corners and squares of the city. One of the statues I was most excited to see was that of one of my favourite film-makers. They erected this sculpture after he received the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2002. So after enjoying a great day in Oviedo, I said goodbye by the statue of Woody Allen, and gave him my sunglasses, as his had been stolen.
Squares in Oviedo
El Fontan Square
(30)
You will eat very well here. It is a very big place with plenty of tables where you can eat good food and drink Asturian cider. To get there, you have to go to the square from the street market, but you can't see it. It is behind the Town Hall Square. On this street there are many restaurants and a market place.

The best things to do in Oviedo

There are many places to visit in Oviedo, especially those related to the so-called Asturian pre-Romanesque art, which developed during the existence of that kingdom in the ninth and tenth centuries.

Examples of this art, which are also major attractions in Oviedo, are the Holy Chamber, a chapel located within the architectural complex of the Cathedral; and the wall of San Tirso or Foncalada, one of the top things to see in Oviedo that houses a fountain. The latter is the only conserved civil Romanesque work of art.

In terms of religious architecture, Oviedo attractions include the Cathedral of San Salvador, a mainly Gothic building built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Monastery of San Vicente, the Monastery of San Pelayo, the Church of San Isidoro, built by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century, and the Church of San Juan el Real, all of which should be on your list of what to do in Oviedo.

Other of things to do in Oviedo include visiting the numerous palaces, like the Valdecarzana-Heredia Palace, the Palace of Malleza-Toreno, the Camposagrado Palace, the Palacio del Marqués de San Feliz, and the Palacio de Velarde. Visiting the latter is one of the necessary Oviedo activities. More stuff to do in Oviedo can include a cultural tour and visits to museums and parks. Plan your trip well and don't leave a single corner left unseen in this beautiful city.
