When you arrive in Aranda de Duero, the first thing you'll probably do is go for a walk around the historic center. As you ramble leisurely through the little streets, you'll suddenly come upon this imposing and grandiosely ornate church behind the main square. At night, it's impressive. It's ground-lit and the shadows over the thousands of little sculptures and multiple Gothic archways is magical. When I visited, the interior was being renovated (which, I suppose, is for the best), but we could still admire the incredible facade, the intricate detail of all the adorning sculptures, and the curious Gothic spires on the left end of the cathedral. During your time in Aranda de Duero, I'm sure the cathedral will be a guiding point as you explore the city, and it should be at the top of your list of things to see.

I must admit that I'm not really one for church tourism, and doubly so for church museums. But the visit to the Sacro Iglesia de San Juan is worth it to see the Las Calderonas Altar area. It's a corner of the church that has a gorgeous Gothic style dome and a nice series of wood-panel painting featuring St. John the Baptist, among others. At the end of the altar area, there's a mausoleum-like sculpture of a reclining man that's lit by a solitary window whose light guides the visitor. It looks like something out of Indiana Jones! The rest of the museum shows off nice, if a tad boring, relics from the early church and things like paintings and tapestries. Another highlight is the choir area; it's nothing out of this world but it's a nice quiet place to sit for a minute and take in the museum's vaulted ceilings and various altar areas all in one glance. Plus, the ancient organ is pretty cool, too.

Aranda de Duero is a unique city in that it has over 3 miles of underground wine cellars snaking through the ground beneath the city streets. These cellars, built between the 12th and 18th century, we used mainly to store wine thanks to the constant temperatures provided by a thick layer of clay. One of the most famous (and free to visit) is the Cellar of the Souls. You need to book a visit (again, it's free) at the Tourism Office in the Plaza Mayor. Group visits usually take place at 1 and 5pm and last about 30 or 45 minutes. They give you a little bit of explanation and take you on a tour of one of the public cellars. The tour, to be honest, is a tad boring but the setting sure makes up for it. I'd suggest heading into the tour at the end so you can only the eerie and unique atmosphere away from the crowd huddled around the guide and hey, why not, even sneak off a bit by yourself to snap some photos. I'd recommend it!
