Nature Reserves in Las Cañadas del Teide
Las Cañadas del Teide National Park
(86)
This is a must stop for all of you who are visiting Tenerife. Since I was staying at the Costa Adeje, south of the island, I traveled from south to north along the TF-21 road in a rented car, from Vilaflor to Icod de los Vinos, crossing Las Cañadas. It is amazing to see how the landscape changes as you go up. First you pass the forests of the Corona Forestal Natural Park, the biggest protected natural reserve of the archipelago (more than 46000 hectares). When you pass the 2700 meters above sea level, the landscape drastically changes and the greenness is substituted by an arid landscape, almost lunar, composed by rocky formations, volcanic cones and craters. Along the road you encounter different viewpoints that allow you to contemplate the majestic landscape that resulted from the eruptions of the Teide Volcano, which has an altitude 3,718, the highest peak of the country and named World Heritage by UNESCO. The first three stops are: Boca de Tauce, Zapatilla de la Reina, Mirador de la Ruleta. Afterwards you reach the most famous place of Las Cañadas: Roques de García, from where you have a spectacular view of de Ucanca and where the Parador Nacional de Turismo is found. 2362 above sea level is the next stop, Tabonal Negro, a landscape formed by a sea of dark lava and obsidians. Here is the detour that takes you to the cable car that in 10 minutes travels 2.5 km and leaves you at the base of the crater. I wasn’t able to go up because of the wind so I continued to the last viewpoint, Minas San José, the landscape I liked the most, since it is a vast extension of white color that looks like sand. Following the TF-21, you start to go down to the northern part of the island, crossing once again the Corona Forestal. At times it looks like a sea of clouds, like cotton between the trees. This trip is really worth it and it has impressive landscapes.
Zoos in Puerto de la Cruz
Loro Parque
(87)
A long time ago I went to this zoo. The entrance is somewhat expensive. It is located in Puerto de la Cruz (north of Tenerife). In Naturavisión, the pretty crystal cupola inside de park, we can see nice landscapes of our planet and the flora and fauna of the different natural parks in Spain. Next to it, there is a big lake with green grass and a few flamencos. It has various restaurants and gift shops.
Villages in Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz
(36)
El Puerto de la Cruz is a small coastal town of the northern coast of Tenerife. It is a town with a pretty historical area, besides this, it receives a lot of tourism in its numerous hotels. In general, the southern coast is more popular, since the weather is usually better in the south of the island, but in Puerto de la Cruz there is a lot of tourism. The majority of people go there for the day, to visit the famous Loro Parque. But the center of town, with its ancient colonial houses, the port and streets are also worth a visit. The town is near the city of Orotava, and it is reached with the Titsa buses. In general, the hotels offer weekly packages, but in low season they have very good offers.
Cliffs in Los Gigantes
Acantilado de los Gigantes
(46)
After visiting Punta Teno and observing the cliffs of the Giants from afar, we decided we had to go and see them from below in a small boat. And so we did it... After searching and searching for a small boat for a few people, we found a sailboat named Alexander. It carried a maximum of 9 people. Simply stunning. The cliffs are 600 meters high and we swam in its turquoise waters! What more could you want!
Cities in La Orotava
La Orotava
(22)
La Orotava is a town in the northern part of Tenerife, located in the valley of La Orotava. It is five kilometers away from the coast, and the nearest town is the Puerto de la Cruz. La Orotava has 40000 inhabitants and it is a beautiful place because it has very pretty houses from the time of the first conquerors. There is a small tourist office, and the route is traced in the streets so that you don’t miss the main points of interest. Among them are the beautiful house of balconies, which is a museum and a workshop which still makes traditional arts and crafts. The entrance to the workshop is free of charge, but you have to pay for the museum. Then there is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, the convent of San Agustín, the square of the city hall…and the beautiful gardens of Quinta Roja. La Orotaya is reached with the Titsa buses, and from the road that almost surrounds the island, so you can get there from the south as well. The Orotaya Valley is famous for its wines and it has a designation of origin.
Lakes in Puerto de la Cruz
Lago Martiánez
(54)
This place forms part of the Martiánez Complex, and it is the work of art of Manrique in Tenerife. He, our genius, was able to create an oasis next to the sea, made of volcanic rock, palm trees, cactuses and a spectacle of lights strategically located and sculptures worthy of praise. In fact, these pools were inaugurated in 1977, and in 2005 they were declared “Historical Garden”. By 2008 it had received 26 million visitors. One of my favorite characteristics is that under the restaurant that is located in the central island there was a recreation room with a great spectacle called Andrómoda. It is now in the Casino de Tenerife, which used to be in the Taoro Hotel, which will see further along. As a curious fact, it takes six hours to fill with clean water from the sea that goes into the pools through high pressure pipes. It was so much fun to go up to the promontory so that the ice cold water fell on top of us… I remember the huge lines to go in during the first months. I also remember the feeling of taking a swim in the lake with the completely white bottom and the light blue water. I haven’t been there in a long time, I’m getting nostalgic…
Of Cultural Interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Auditorio de Tenerife
(50)
The Auditorium is, after the tram and the Torres de Santa Cruz, the most recent architectural acquisition of the spectacular capital. Conceived by architect Santiago Calatrava, the building evokes the hull of a boat and possesses enviable acoustic qualities. As always with innovative construction, its design had many detractors, justifying too many points in common with existing buildings, especially the Auditorium of Sydney, or little originality. It is at the entrance of Santa Cruz, near the commercial port and the Convention and Exhibition Centre. It has hosted numerous concerts and shows, and acceptance has been great (especially among connoisseurs of acoustic and classical music). The interior can be somewhat cold, but you quickly forget that after the first notes that, after all, are what make us hot or cold, and take us to Sydney and beyond.

Beaches in Taganana
Playa de Benijo
(18)
If I had to choose the most beautiful beach I would most definitely choose this one, with eyes closed. I was lucky to discover it thanks to this application. After traveling in the Anaga Park and its one thousand curves, we reached our destiny. We had to stop numerous times to enjoy the landscapes, mainly because the sky was clear (try to choose a sunny day). It is worth highlighting the fact that there is not much development in the area. If you visit the beach with children, I recommend the previous beach (Almáciga) since there are lifeguards there and it is more accessible.

Nature Reserves in Anaga
Rural Park of Anaga
(18)
The Anaga Rural Park is a natural protected space located in the northeast of the island of Tenerife, with a surface of about 14500 hectares along the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna and Tegueste. The landscape is really impressive, formed by an abrupt range of trimmed peaks. Between them there are deep valleys and cliffs that descend to sea level. Due to the different altitudes, the landscape is full of contrasts, from thick forests of laurisilva (the most important ones in the world) in the higher areas, to Dragon Trees, palms, tabaibas and cardons in the lower ones. Generally there is a thick fog (it is recommendable to take something to cover yourself, even if you see a splendid sun). Due to the characteristics of the terrain and the difficult access, it is an area with little population, but very visited by nature and hiking lovers. You get there through the TF-12 road, a narrow and curvy road, but with a very good road surface and very little traffic, although I was surprised to see buses in this remote place; as you go up in altitude you find different viewpoints: Jardina, Cruz del Carmen, Pico del Inglés, Abicor y El Bailadero. In the Cruz del Carmen viewpoint there is a small chapel and a visitor’s center, with a small exhibit room about the park’s flora and fauna, and a tourist information office that explains the different hiking routes available. The park has been declared special protection area for the birds.
Villages in Garachico
Garachico
(27)
Garachico is a very nice visit and a stop you must make if you are in Tenerife. It is a town with a long history, very marked, since it was buried by a volcano close to Teide. The original birth of the town was at the end of the 15th century (like many of the towns in Canary Islands). At the beginning of the 18th century, a volcano erupted and buried the whole town and it had to be reconstructed from scratch, from a black and rocky landscape. Today, it is known for its rich architecture, with a great variety of sights. The town is located between the sea and a long slope that ascends in a vertiginous way and where there are a small number of houses and buildings. This has favored the preservation of those already built, and it stops the expansion and the creation of touristic complexes, etc. Inside the town we find various restaurants that offer fresh fish and seafood, as well as other famous local dishes. Among the main attractions are the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Ayuntamiento (city hall) which is an ex-convent and which also serves as the Casa de la Cultura (Culture House) that houses books about the culture in Canarias; the San Miguel Castle which used to be a small fort and is now a mini museum that is well preserved; and to spend a nice morning (or day), the natural pools. When the sea is calm, it is the perfect place to bathe in crystalline waters between the lavas that formed curious irregular formations. There are various long pools where the water comes in with almost no waves, making the water renew itself. Also, there is another “conventional” pool, also salt water, but whose bottom is made of cement and that the octopuses and crabs cannot reach. But, obviously, you have to pay to get in.
Villages in Masca
Masca
(15)
In the rural park of Teno is found the village of Masca, which one could think it was a central American country with date trees, great lizards on volcanic rocks, bougainvilleas of every imaginable color, an authentic paradise. We are in the northeastern point of the island. You must be an experienced driver to reach the village, you will find cars coming in the opposite direction and you will need to be creative to let them pass, you will have to park wherever you can and walk along a spectacular path to reach the magnificent beach and to see the Masca ravine. It is an incomparable sight, and I think it is my favorite place of the island.

Beaches in Puerto de la Cruz
Playa Jardin
(15)
For me, it’s the best beach in Puerto de la Cruz, since its quite big, approximately 700 meters long, and its location is good, since it’s only about 1500 meters from the center (Plaza del Charco). For example, if you go by car you have to take exit number 18. It is an original beach, since I usually go to beaches with fine golden sand, and here it is the complete opposite: black and rough volcanic sand, it looks like small stones. You must be careful with the waves when you go inside the sea.
Squares in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Plaza de Espana
(29)
This iconic and large square is in the capital of Tenerife and the War Memorial presides here in the form of a tower with a cross on top. This square is between the Plaza de la Candelaria, which is where all kinds of trades take place, and the seafront. Plaza de España was remodeled and where there were gardens, now stands a beautiful little lake like a giant pond with a modern building surrounded by greenery which houses the tourist information centre.
