Where to stay in San Diego

    Hotels in San Diego
    The Sofia Hotel
A great choice if you're going to be spending a few nights in the city, you're just a few steps away from everything and it's a budget hotel compared to the Hilton and the other ones in the Bay area. The rooms are very well insulated and have some of the best beds and pillows I've ever encountered as a traveler. That's right: the twin room is small, and can be a bit distressing to organize if two people are sleeping together, it's better to ask for a bigger bed. The toilet is in the room, but it's a separate bathroom. The rest of the room's amenities are very good and are very complete with TV, iron, fridge and a microwave. The hotel staff are a delight: they help you with everything you need, advises you on tourism issues, and will manage your reservations. They always have water available in the lobby and pet treats. You also get free USA Today and they have a fitness center with cardio machines, weights and a yoga area that's amazing. The worst part is that the room is small and you have to add in addition to the taxes, the "resort fee" to your stay: internet, water in the room every day and other amenities are paid part of this fee.

    La Quinta Inn & Suites
We stayed at the La Quinta Inn near Highway 101 which runs through San Diego. The neighborhood is called Mission Bay and it's located almost opposite the large city park. There are lots of restaurants and markets nearby and the Mission Bay beach is also within walking distance. The hotel itself was great: the room was very cozy, the beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was adequate. The breakfast was included, and in addition to the usual muffins, yogurt, coffee and fruit, they also had a waffle machine! It's super-easy to do...just add the mix and it's ready in 3 minutes. Parking and wi-fi are included in the price of the room.

    Youth Hostels in San Diego
HI - San Diego Downtown Hostel
The HI in San Diego is one of the better hostels I've stayed at, primarily because of its location and cleanliness. (I have to emphasize that I am very impressed with how spick and span my room was.) It’s right in the heart of the Gaslamp District, so there is plenty to do, especially for those big on nightlife. (For example, Stingaree [a club] is only a block away!) The staff is also pleasantly accommodating (shout out to Vo who was a humongous help). Additionally, there is complimentary breakfast and free tea bags and cocoa powder, among other things, available for hostelers. Other amenities include a laundry room, computers, vending machines, game room, and courtyard. I would stay here again and highly recommend this place!

    Hotel Vyvant
Hotel Vyvant is hands down the most wonderful place I have ever stayed throughout my travels - and I have stayed in a LOT of places. It is not the biggest, the fanciest, or the most extravagant place I have ever stayed, but it beats out all the rest because of its authenticity, charm, friendliness, comfort and location. This hotel used to be a large house, and has since been developed into a small Bed and Breakfast style establishment that features single rooms with shared washrooms, private rooms with private washrooms, and apartment-style accommodations as well. The décor has a very vintage and homey feel to it, it is positively adorable and made me feel like I was staying in someone's home rather than in a hotel. The staff are second to none…I did not have one interaction while I was there that was anything less than spectacular. They were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested in chatting with me and getting to know me. I felt incredibly safe as a solo female traveler, the beds were comfortable, amenities adequate and the entire establishment was very clean. Hotel Vyvant is within walking distance to literally everything but Sea World. Balboa park, countless museums and the San Diego Zoo are 30 minutes away, Old Town is about 40 minutes away, The Gaslamp Quarter is 20 minutes away, the harbor is 10 minutes away, and the hotel itself is nestled right in the heart of Little Italy…which I personally never even wanted to leave. If you don't feel like walking those distances, the San Diego MTS bus and trolley system is easy to use, and there are many cabs available as well. The hotel also provides complimentary happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays, including beer, wine and appies. Every morning, there is an included breakfast available which features local fresh-baked pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, and a selection of coffee, teas, and juice. Hotel Vyvant is the most hospitable place I have ever stayed, and I recommend it 100%. I know I'll be back!
