Bowmore

Although none of the ferries dock at Bowmore, it is the largest city on the island of Islay. This is where you'll find the biggest shops, hotels and restaurants, as well as a petrol station (it's better to fill up before you get to the island, as petrol is expensive here). The tourist information office is located in the square next to the distillery, which is one of the most popular attractions on Islay. It's not such an old city, founded in 1768, and the first planned city in Scotland. It soon became the administrative capital of the island, and an important fishing port. It played an important role for the warships in World War Two, and today is a charming town.

Bowmore is a model village built by the then owner of the island Daniel Campbell in 1768. The high street is two symmetrical rows of white houses leading up to the round church at the top.

There is a good range of shops here; a general store, a large co-op, a butcher, tourist information and a bank with a cash machine. The Celtic house coffee and gift shop is worth a visit. Upstairs is the cafe and a good selection of Scottish knitwear and downstairs there is an excellent selection of books on local history, wildlife and walks.

Those looking for authentic craftwork should also stop at the Islay Woolen Mill, close to Bridgend.
