Where the Apostle James is buried

According to tradition, the Apostle James is buried in the interior of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela so this cathedral has always been an important center of Catholic pilgrimage. You can visit St James' Tomb through a small door and stairs which lead down to the grave site. Normally it's one of the busiest areas of the cathedral, visited by hundreds of pilgrims every day. Inside this tiny, narrow chapel is a plaque commemorating the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1989.
