Cairnpapple Hill

Between the towns of Bathgate and Torphichen (central belt of Scotland, about 30 minutes from Edinburgh) and with a splendid view over the Firth of Forth, the Cairnpapple Hill seems to stand in the middle of nowhere. This place is one of the many prehistoric sites in Scotland, with more found on the Orkney Islands, Shetland and Lewis. The excavations carried out between 1947 and 1948 brought remains from the 4th millennium BC to light. A moat was built on the hill, along with several large stone monoliths erected in a circular form, suggesting that this was a site of religious interest although other Bronze Age remains suggest that it may have been a burial site.
