1 review of Mugdock Castle

Well preserved ruins

Mugdock Castle was founded in the eighteenth century on the banks of Lake Mugdock, as the main seat of Clan Graham in what is today the county town of Stirling. Today it is in ruined, but still in fairly good condition from the south facade to the main tower. Once inside, you can see the internal structure and work out where the main residences were in the tower, as well as the stables, servants' quarters, kitchens and chapel. The Clan Graham underwent a major change in 1505 when they were declared Earl of Montrose, and the famous James Graham, first Earl of Montrose, was born in this room. He became famous for protecting Rob Roy from the Duke of Argyll.
