Fontana delle Tartarughe

Wonderful Fountain of Giacomo della Porta

Turtle Fountain (Fontana delle Tartarughe) is a wonderful fountain built by Giacomo della Porta in Mattei Square at the end of Via della Reginella. Incidentally, Piazza Mattei bears the name of a powerful family who lived in the area at the time of Medioevo, who controlled the entire Tiber Island and the left bank of the Tiber. The fountain was built in the sixteenth century but Bernini added the turtles in 1658 and it's considered to be one of the most elegant fountains in Rome.
