Strategic location

Galle Lighthouse was built in the colonial part of the city, called Galle Fort, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's painted white and is not only pretty, but it also integrates well with atmosphere of the rest of the colonial city. To visit, there are plenty of "guides" hanging around that will tell you the history in exchange for a few coins. Galle was built by the Portuguese, but it was used as a port mostly during the Dutch era. The lighthouse has a strategic location that lets you see any boat approaching the city.
