1 review of Nara Tokae Festival

Worth a visit

To Nara Nara Kae or Tokae is a holiday in August, during which ten thousand coloured candles are displayed. It's not exactly a traditional feast, as it's only taken place since 1999, but it has become one of the most popular events in this quiet town. It takes place between 5 and 15 August, and commemorates Nara, which was named capital of Japan in 710, and is therefore celebrating its 1300th anniversary. During the days that the event lasts, 10,000 candles are spread through the old town and are lit one by one, with best wishes for those who come to walk among them.
